Boating is a beloved pastime for many, but it also comes with a lot of responsibilities. One such responsibility is to be prepared for emergencies that may happen out on the water.
Continue reading below as we share some tips on what you should keep in your boating emergency kit to stay prepared even when things go wrong on board.
First Aid Kit
Any emergency kit should contain a first aid kit because you never know when you or one of your passengers might need medical attention.
Make sure your first aid kit is equipped with bandages, antiseptic, gauze, scissors, and other basic medical supplies. You may also want to include other items like allergy medications or an EpiPen if you deem it necessary.
Flares & Signaling Devices
In case of an emergency, you’ll want to be visible to other boaters and emergency responders in the area.
For this reason, it’s recommended that you equip your boat with flares, which are a common signaling device that can help draw attention to your craft. You’ll want to know how to use them, and keep them in an easily accessible place should you need them in a pinch.
Aside from flares, there are other signaling devices that you can include such as safety lights, reflective tape, or an emergency whistle.
Personal Flotation Devices
It’s crucial that there’s a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for everyone on board. Before you take off on the water, make sure you have enough for all passengers, and that they’re in good condition.
Once aboard, make sure everyone knows where the PFDs are stored, and how to put them on. When not in use, you should regularly check your PFDs to make sure they’re not damaged or worn out, and replace them when necessary.
Marine Radio & GPS
A marine radio and GPS are essential for communication and navigation while you’re at sea. In case of an emergency, you need to be able to call for help, and a marine radio is the best way to do that.
A GPS can also help you navigate in case of low visibility if you’re lost. Make sure you know how to use both devices and keep them charged at all times.
Fire Extinguisher
You may not know it, but fires can happen on boats just as easily as they can on land. So, make sure you have a fire extinguisher designed for marine use, and that it’s in good working order each time you set out to sail.
Having a fire extinguisher on the boat isn’t enough, you also need to make sure everyone on board knows where it’s stored and how to use it.
Waterproof Bag
A waterproof bag can be useful for storing important documents, electronic devices, and crucial emergency supplies while on board.
In case of an emergency, you’ll want to make sure these items are protected from water damage and easily accessible. You may also want to pack a spare set of clothes in the waterproof bag in case someone gets wet.
Boating emergencies can happen. But, if you stay prepared with a fully-equipped emergency kit each time you hop on board, you’ll be ready to handle any adverse situation that may arise.
