No matter how eager you are to get your boat on the water, making sure you complete the proper steps to launch your boat safely should be your top priority. To help eliminate some of the guesswork about what’s necessary, use this pre-launch checklist to make sure all the essential steps are taken care of before you set sail.
Eventually, this checklist will become second nature to you. But, even the most seasoned boaters can use a refresher.
Check the Forecast
To stay safe on the water, you should always check the weather forecast in your area before heading out for a day of boating. Specifically, you’ll want to look out for thunderstorms and strong winds, which could pose potentially hazardous conditions.
Inspect Your Craft
Take a good look at your craft while it’s still on the shore. Inspect the hull for any cracks, dents, or other signs of damage. You should also look at the propeller to see if you notice any dings, bends, or tangled fishing lines.
Make sure to look out for any signs of corrosion on fittings, anchor, hatches, rails, and other metal fixtures, and test out the bilge pump to make sure it’s in good working order. Check your anchor lines for any signs of wear or fraying.
If you notice any element of your craft has been damaged or compromised, it’s best to sit the day out and wait until you can make the proper repairs.
Check for Safety Equipment & Gear
Always make sure that you have the proper safety equipment on board before each trip out on the water. This includes items such as:
- Life jackets
- Flares/distress signals
- Fire extinguishers
- Flashlights
- Whistles/horns
Check to see that all life jackets are of the correct size for your passengers and that you have enough for everyone on board.
Before everyone gets on the boat, make sure they’re wearing the proper attire for the conditions and that they know how to use and access the lifesaving equipment on the craft.
Top Off Fuel Levels
Make sure you have enough fuel for your planned trip, and top it off if needed. You should also check your engine oil and other fluids like coolant and hydraulic fluid before you set off on the water.
Test Your Technology
Test all navigation lights, GPS functionality, and communication devices before you begin your excursion.
You’ll want to make sure that your radio is transmitting and receiving signals before launching, and that your GPS is providing accurate position data.
Assess the Battery
Look to see if your battery connections are secure and tight, and if you notice any corrosion throughout your electrical system. Test out your lights, pumps, and electronics to ensure they’re functioning properly.
Make a Float Plan
Before you leave, inform someone back home of your intended route, departure, and arrival times so they can contact the proper authorities if you don’t return as scheduled.
Inspect the Launch Area
Finally, as you’re preparing to launch, make sure you assess the launch area to see if there are any submerged objects or debris that will get in your way and damage the boat.
Look out for other boaters launching at the same time, and adhere to all posted regulations where you’re launching.
