BEFORE YOU BUY- Class A vs Class B AIS 
Class A AIS devices report their position every 2-10 seconds & report static & voyage-related information every 6 minutes.  Class A units can send text messages concerning safety or other useful information, as well. Most commercial ships & large yachts require Class A units. 
Class B AIS devices are more common, but nor required, on recreational boats. They report every 3 minutes or less when anchored. Class B units also report static data every 6 minutes, but no voyage- related information. They can receive safety-related texts & specific AIS messages, but cannot transmit them. 
Class B SOTDMA, also called Class B/SO or Class B+ share the features of Class A & Class B AIS devices.
