Extending the Boating Season: How to Enjoy Your Boat this Fall

Labor Day often marks the end of the summer boating season, but that doesn’t mean you have to pack up your craft and winterize it just yet. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy your boat this fall as the air gets crisper and the days get shorter, So, here are some considerations for using your boat this fall to extend the boating season.

Less Crowded Waterways

With many kids going back to school and summer vacationers heading back home, you’ll likely experience less crowded waterways as the tourists trickle out. This is one of the many reasons why you might want to continue using your boat well into fall, as you will enjoy the peacefulness of the open water without the business of the summer season.

Of course, tourists and vacationers add a fun and vibrant energy to the waterways, but the serenity of fall boating is too good to pass up, especially as warm weather persists.

Milder Temperatures

High humidity and triple-digit temperatures aren’t too bad when you’re on the water. But, boating can be a lot more enjoyable in the milder temperatures that many areas in the United States experience in September and October. The comfortable fall temperatures can help you enjoy a full day out on the boat rather than heading out early in the mornings or later in the evenings for an enjoyable ride.

Foliage Viewing

As the temperatures do dip throughout the fall, you can do some gorgeous viewing from your boat of the changing leaves throughout parts of the country. You will probably even get better and more unobstructed views of the fall leaves from your boat, and you can enjoy some nice and quiet moments to yourself as you relish in the scenery.

Fall Fishing

Any experienced angler knows that the fall fishing season is just as good, if not better than in the summertime. Typically during the fall, fish may even be putting on more weight, resulting in bigger catches and a more exhilarating experience. Plus, given the waterways are less crowded than in the summer, you will likely face less competition when fishing in the fall.

Autumnal Picnics

If you’ve ever gone out for a picnic on a warm fall afternoon, you can have twice as much fun when you do so on your boat. Bring your picnic spread on board, and enjoy some seasonal tasty treats with friends and family as you enjoy the clear open waters and the afternoon sun. This gives you a great weekend activity you can do in the fall as you take in the scenery and enjoy a meal with loved ones al fresco.

Birdwatching

During the fall, many bird species will be migrating south for the winter. If this is something you’ve always been interested in doing, take the opportunity this fall to head out on your boat with some binoculars and a bird guidebook to marvel at the wildlife. You may even see some other wildlife aside from the birds like beavers or deer along the coastline.
